Ini Edo Breaks Down Over CAN Threats to Pull Her Movie “A Very Dirty Christmas”

Nollywood actress Ini Edo has broken down in tears while addressing the backlash from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over her holiday film “A Very Dirty Christmas.”

During an emotional Instagram Live session, she apologized for any offense caused by the title but insisted the movie itself does not disrespect Christianity.

CAN had earlier issued a formal statement condemning the title, arguing that associating Christmas—a season of purity and redemption—with the word “detty” (dirty) diminishes its spiritual significance. The association demanded a change of title, a public apology, and greater sensitivity toward sacred periods.

Ini explained that she never intended to insult Christians, stressing that she is a believer herself. She said that if she had known the title would spark such controversy, she would have chosen differently. She urged Nigerians to watch the film before judging, emphasizing that its themes revolve around humor and drama rather than irreverence. Her colleagues and fellow entertainers expressed support during the live session, encouraging her to remain strong.

The actress reiterated that art is meant to provoke thought and reflect human realities, and that her personal faith would never allow her to deliberately disrespect God or the church.

The controversy highlights the delicate balance between creative freedom and religious sensitivities in Nigeria’s cultural landscape, where titles and portrayals of faith often generate strong reactions.
